That contracted form is what carried over into vernacular Aramaic usage in the Second Temple era. **Hebrew script:** - Full form: **יְהוֹשֻׁעַ** - Short form: **יֵשׁוּעַ** **Joshua ben Nun called Ἰησοῦς in Acts:** Acts 7:45, in Stephen's speech — the tabernacle "our fathers who came after brought in with Jesus (Ἰησοῦ) into the possession of the nations." This is Joshua son of Nun, using the LXX's standard rendering of יְהוֹשֻׁעַ as Ἰησοῦς. (Also Hebrews 4:8) **Yeshua ben Yehotsadak in Ezra and Zechariah :** The two books actually spell his name *differently in the Hebrew itself*, even though it's the same high priest: - **Ezra 3:2** — MT: וַיָּקָם יֵשׁוּעַ בֶּן־יוֹצָדָק (short form, יֵשׁוּעַ). LXX: Ἰησοῦς ὁ τοῦ Ιωσεδεκ. Same pattern recurs at Ezra 3:8, 5:2. - **Zechariah 3:1** — MT: וַיַּרְאֵנִי אֶת־יְהוֹשֻׁעַ הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדוֹל (full form, יְהוֹשֻׁעַ). LXX also renders Ἰησοῦς there, and again at 3:3, 3:6, 3:8, 3:9, and 6:11. So Ezra/Nehemiah/Chronicles consistently use the contracted post-exilic spelling for this priest, while Zechariah uses the archaic full spelling — but the LXX flattens both into the same Greek form, Ἰησοῦς, since Greek has no way to preserve the Hebrew orthographic distinction.
