COMMENTARY ON ROMANS
The story of Samson and Delilah presents to us an
anatomy of the flesh or sin-prone fallen
nature as it viewed by the eyes of G-d in a believer (Ro 7:18) and also an
unbeliever (Ro 7:5).
When we read the story in Judges chapter 13 through 16, the first question
we ask is, Who is more blind, the unsaved damsel who meets a Spirit-filled
Deliverer or Savior (Moshia) and remains unsaved, knowing him only after
the flesh (2C 5:16),
not seeing him according to the wisdom of the Ruach Hakodesh, stupidly
using her womanly wiles to trade off a man of destiny, a prototype of
Moshiach Goeleinu, a hero of the faith fated to be recorded in Holy Writ,
whom she exchanges (along with her eternal salvation) for a money payoff
and thereby stupidly and blindly misses all that Boaz gave Ruth, to say
nothing of Chayei Olam? Who
is more blind? Delilah? Or is
Samson more blind, because he does not see her as a spiritual test that
will also become a punishment (Jer 2:19) because, after breaking the FIFTH COMMANDMENT (and not
honoring his father Manoah, who wanted to arrange a Torah-sanctioned
marriage (Dt 7:3-4),
Samson then finds out all too horribly the disastrous consequences of partial obedience
(avoiding barbershops was not all that G-d required of Samson!) and
therefore Samson has to suffer in the flesh to cease from the besetting sin of the
lust of the eyes
which could all have been avoided if he would have simply obeyed G-d fully
and cut forbidden soul
ties.
Since Scripture is the mirror of the soul, you
look at Samson and see yourself. All we like sheep have gone astray, each
has gone his own Philistine way. And now, Samson, your life is filled with
Philistines, and what the heathen most fear (14:15) will come upon them
(15:6). And, if you
continue to harden your heart, Samson, against the L-rd (for Hashem has
laid on Moshiach Adoneinu the iniquity of us all, and G-d's kindness is
meant to lead you to repentance, Samson), then what you most fear will
also come upon you. It is not so much Delilah but rather your lack of
moral discernment (Prov
11:22 and Prov
30:20) that has betrayed you (you do what is right in your own eyes,
but you do not think about what is right in the eyes of the L-rd), and so,
Samson, here is the question of all questions: will you betray your calling, for which you
were set apart from birth (RO 1:1)? Or will you be
true to your calling unto death (13:7)? G-d desires to
deliver many through a stirring of the Ruach Hakodesh in your life
(14:6). But you are not
only Samson, you are also Delilah. Your charm could mesmerize vipers (and
you are quite wiley [Prov
7:10] in using your charm and then covering your tracks [but the L-rd
is watching, Jer
16:17]) though your charm can fell men like trees, but where your
flesh succeeds, the Holy Spirit departs (16:20). Your sin, Samson,
is that you want the forbidden BECAUSE (Prov 9:17) it is
forbidden (RO 7:7), and
Satan (Eph 4:27) will
see your flesh (RO
13:14) and roar like a lion to devour you (14:5), but the Ruach
Hashem will come mightily upon you (14:6) and then it will be
that the L-rd will once again use you (Lk 22:32), after you have
suffered in the flesh and ceased from sin (1K 4:1).
Many
besetting sins begin in childhood or when a teen-age Samson, very gifted
with a titanic self-will, rebels from the parental figure and escapes into
the drug of forbidden sexuality. Then when the minister shows up, it is
like Mother Teresa entering an opium parlour or a crack house where
everyone has given himself over to an orgy of sexual unreality. Sometimes
there is great anger and hurt beneath the surface of such a Samson's sex
drug lifestyle. Sometimes, after all other means fail, the L-rd may have
to deal with such a rebellious, escapist teenage Samson when he is in his
fifties or sixties, allowing his sinful life-long emotional indulgence to
hit a brick wall of ill-health, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has
ceased from sin. This is the L-rd's mercy. For the chastening of the L-rd
also brings repentance and
healing.
