Elijah did not have……money, …any natural means of support, …any rain in a drought (1 Kgs 17–18), …any food of his own, …any way to nourish himself except miraculous provision, …any social standing at Ahab’s court, …any political protection, …any allies in the palace, …any safe place to stay except where God sent him, …any guarantee of daily bread except ravens (1 Kgs 17:4–6), …any flour or oil except the widow’s last handful (1 Kgs 17:8–16), …any power to raise the dead apart from prayer (1 Kgs 17:17–24), …any rainclouds when he confronted Baal (1 Kgs 18:1, 41–45), …any human backup on Mount Carmel (1 Kgs 18:22), …any altar stones except the broken ones he rebuilt (1 Kgs 18:30–32), …any fire of his own—only fire from heaven (1 Kgs 18:36–38), …any protection from Jezebel’s threat (1 Kgs 19:1–3), …any strength left in himself (1 Kgs 19:4–8), …any audible voice—only the still small voice (1 Kgs 19:12), …any successor until God appointed Elisha (1 Kgs 19:16–21), …any earthly end—only a whirlwind and chariots of fire (1 Kings 17–19; extending through 2 Kings 1-2).
