Soaked in Tanakh: Four Threads
Colossians presents an exalted vision of Moshiach as the supreme ruler, Creator, and reconciler of all things in heaven and earth. Facing early speculative philosophies and ascetic traditions, Shaul asserts that the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Moshiach bodily, and that all believers are made complete in Him without needing human traditions or legalistic asceticism.
Tzelem, Bechor & Creation
- Moshiach is revealed as the Tzelem Elohim (the image of the invisible God) and Bechor (Firstborn over all creation), by whom and for whom all things were created (1:15-17).
- This reaches directly into the wisdom theology of Bereshit and Mishlei: He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
- He is the head of the body, the kehillah, and the Firstborn from the dead, so that in everything He might have preeminence.
Shadows vs. Substance (Tzel u'Guf)
- The letter distinguishes between dietary regulations, festivals, new moons, and Shabbatot as Tzel (a shadow of things to come), while the Guf (substance) belongs to Moshiach (2:16-17).
- Circumcision is reframed as a spiritual Milat HaLev (circumcision of the heart) performed without hands in the removal of the sinful nature (2:11-12).
- Believers are warned against hollow philosophies, angel worship, and self-imposed ascetical decrees that lack power against fleshly indulgence.
The Hidden Mystery & New Humanity
- The hidden mystery (Raz) now revealed to the kedoshim is: Moshiach in you, the hope of kavod (1:26-27).
- In this renewed humanity, national and social divisions fall away—there is no Jew or Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian or Scythian, slave or free, but Moshiach is all and in all (3:11).
- Believers put off the old self with its practices and put on the new self, renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator.
The Reverence-Pattern & The Accursed Tree
- When speaking of Moshiach’s triumph over cosmic rulers and spiritual powers, the exhibit preserves the circumlocution the accursed tree / tree of shame rather than later technical execution terms.
- By blotting out the record of debt through His death on the tree, Moshiach disarmed powers and authorities, making a public spectacle of them (2:14-15).
- The language reflects the Tanakh pattern of victory through sacrifice, maintaining rich Jewish reverence throughout the text.
